Reagan Democrats Still Exist

Last week I was fishing with my daughter in southern West Virginia.

The part of the state where we were is solid Bobby Byrd country. His name is plastered on various public works, and you can see that the man certainly worked to bring Federal cash to his state.

Our guide fishes and hunts, of course. So I jokingly asked him if he was bitter?

He laughed, knowing exactly to what I referred.

Expanding on my joke, he called himself a 'dollar Democrat,' but declared he will be voting for McCain.

No Black Adder for him. It boiled down to, as he put it,

"McCain is a veteran, and was a POW. That's all I need to know."

This is actually what I suspect will be replayed countless times across the broad belt of 'blue' states this November.

Our guide is not an older man. He's not yet 40. He is, in his way, a very successful entrepreneur.

On the basis of his demographics, you'd assume he's a liberal Democrat. He has assembled several businesses, is self-employed, and probably has no major medical coverage.

But he owns several rental properties. Has virtually no debt. And sends his child to a private religiously-affiliated local school, because he and his wife know better than to let their child languish in the area's public schools.

Yes, I think many more people like our guide will be turning away from Illinois' freshman Senator this November, and pulling the lever for the American with whom they can identify.
